Corona pandemic: bridging aid for students in financial emergency situations

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is helping students who are demonstrably in a financial or economic emergency situation due to the corona pandemic with grants totalling 100 million euros. These grants are paid out via the student service organizations – the Studierenden- or Studentenwerk (STW).

Note: You can apply for bridging aid online as of 16 June 2020 on, from 12 a.m. onwards. However, for technical reasons, we will only be able to process and assess the applications and initiate payments after 25 June 2020.

Measures to support students during the Corona Pandemic from the KfW Student Loan

Subsidy Interest for all loans in the disbursement of the KfW Student Loan

  • The new interest rate will apply from the 01 May 2020 until the 31 March 2021 for all dispursements from the loan. The interest rate has been reduced to 0,00%.
  • The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will cover the interest.
  • Starting 01 April 2021, the regular interest rate will apply again and will be a fixed rate for 6 months at a time.
  • The reduced interest rate will also apply to new contracts starting 01 June 2020.
  • Additionally, flexible repayment methods and in some situations, deferral options that can be agreed upon with the KfW.

Extension of possible applicants to all foreign students

  • The circle of eligible applicants has been extended to allow foreign students at state-recognized universities to apply.
  • Further requirements include a domestic registered address and a SEPA bank account.
  • The application is possible from 01 June 2020 with a financing start on the 01 July 2020.
  • The reduced interest rate applies until the 31 March 2021 (latest applications accepted until the 15 February 2021).

Due to the Corona pandemic, the Techniker Krankenkasse is currently unable to personally answer your questions on health insurance on site.

Therefore, Techniker Krankenkasse now offers weekly phone consultation hours.

Here's how it works:

According to §2 of the of the Ordinance of the State Government on Infection Protection from 17 April 2020 against the spread of the SARS-Cov-2-Virus, all facilities will remain closed until 3 May 2020.

The measures that have been adopted after weighing the dynamic situation of the Corona Visus, The crisis team of the Studierendenwerk is in close contact with our partner insitutions, the city of Mannheim, and the relevant health organizations/authorities in order to take the necessary precautions. Thank you for your understanding!

All cafeterias and cafés will be closed immediately.

In accordance with §2 of the Ordinance of the State Government on Infection Protection from 16 March 2020 against the spread of the SARS-Cov-2-Virus, all facilities will remain closed from the 17 March until 19 April.

Restrictions and partial suspension of service hours

All open consultation and service hours will be cancelled from 17 March 2020 until 19 April 2020. The telephone consultation hours have been partially extended and will continue until further notice. Students are asked to express their concerns and ask questions by telephone or e-mail. The staff will then decide if a personal appointment is necessary and can be offered - this cannot be guaranteed.

Appointments can be made if necessary by telephone.

All party rooms in the Student Residence Halls are closed until further notice.

Counseling and Loan Office

Open consultation will also be cancelled. Personal appointments can be made for Tuesdays or Thursdays (Mensaria am Schloss) or Wednesdays (Hochschule Mannheim) by telephone.

KfW Student Loan

Please make an appointment for the legitimacy examination for the KfW Student Loan.
If you only need to present your KfW certificate, you can send it together with your current certificate of enrollment and a copy of your ID as a PDF document by email or by mail to the counseling center.
