Wohnen für Hilfe

The Idea

The Project "Wohnen für Hilfe"  aims to assist seniors, persons with a disability, single parents, or families who are looking for help and have living space to offer. Students are to receive reduced rent in return for individually agreed upon assistance.

How it works

Students and those seeking assistance should fill out an application form. The Studierendenwerk will then do its best to match the two from the wishes and expectations that were provided on the application. This service is free of charge. A contract with the individual conditions for assistance, the living arrangement, and the cost of utilities will be written and agreed upon.

Possible Assistance

• Shopping
• Household chores (cleaning, vacuuming)
• Housework (gardening, snow clearing)
• Social activities (companion to events)
• Accompanying outside of the house (offices, doctors)
• Small repairs
• Looking after pets
• Child care, tutoring, homework help
• Technical assistance (computers, phones)
• Cultural assistance (language or music lessons)

Practical Suggestions for assistance terms

• Rights and tasks should be contractually stipulated
• Determine vacation and working hours
• Typically about 12-15 working hours per week
• Private life of both parties must be respected (door to the rented accommodation must be able to be locked)
• Minimum size: 10sq.m, access to kitchen, bathroom, WC

Requirements

• You have a vacant accommodation in Mannheim or in the Mannheim area
• You can live self-dependent, but require some assistance for daily life
• You are communicative and enjoy the company and contact with younger people
• You do not expect nursing-care service
